- 67.9% had high body mass index
- 64.1% had high blood pressure levels
- 38.0% had high cholesterol levels
- 36.7% had low bone density
"We are pleased to continue our effort with Walgreens to help provide important health tests at a time when many still cannot afford preventive health care," said A. Barry Rand, AARP's Chief Executive Officer. "The results from the first year on the road speak volumes to the need for these basic tests, and will go a long way in increasing the chances for early detection of chronic disease and other potential health problems."

People in urban communities experience disproportionately higher rates of preventable disease. As proven through previous year's programs, health tests are a critical method for detecting potential diseases before symptoms are noticed. Not only are minority groups more susceptible to certain illness and less likely to recover than other groups, but there is an alarming lack of affordable health care available to them. The National Urban League and Walgreens Wellness Tour are encouraging members of urban communities to act as their own health advocates by visiting the health testing vehicle when it stops in their city. Visitors to the tour will also have access to free educational information on a variety of health and wellness issues.
The National Urban League and Walgreens Wellness Tour is one of two national health testing campaigns created by Walgreens.
A separate tour, the AARP/ Walgreens Wellness Tour, is also crossing the country, providing free health tests and services.
Consumers can learn when a tour is scheduled to serve their community by visiting the tour schedule page or by calling toll free 1-866-484-8687.

FAQS
Both AARP and Walgreens are focused on improving the health and quality of life in communities across the nation. Many diseases can be detected long before symptoms are even noticed, which is why early detection is the key to staying healthy. With AARP's help, Walgreens will be able to provide these free health tests to people who are most in need of affordable health care.
The Wellness Tour will offer six free health tests, for a total value of over $100* including:
Total Cholesterol Levels - Tests raise awareness of high blood cholesterol as a risk factor for coronary heart disease, the first step toward modifying lifestyle to reduce risk.
Blood Pressure - High blood pressure is one of the most common chronic conditions in adults; however, people with high blood pressure usually don't have symptoms, so they often don't know that they have it until it is measured.
Bone Density - Bone density testing is a valuable tool in the diagnosis of osteoporosis and is a fairly accurate predictor of a person's risk of fractures.
Glucose Levels - Blood glucose testing is used to screen healthy individuals for diabetes and pre-diabetes because diabetes is a common disease that begins with few symptoms.
Waist Circumference, Body Composition/Body Mass Index - The nation's scales are going up and therefore raising public awareness about the problem of obesity and the risk of excess weight is critical.
*Actual value may vary. No appointment necessary. Adults 18 years and older are eligible.

It is recommended that participants arrive at least one hour prior to the end of each event to best ensure getting tested before the event ends. Tests take between 20-25 minutes, depending on the wait. Participants who are unable to receive their free tests can talk to the tour staff on the bus to receive information about additional tour stops that may be conveniently accessed.

The AARP/Walgreens Wellness Tour's aim is to bring free services and health awareness directly to those who may otherwise not have the resources for and access to affordable health care. AARP and Walgreens will collaborate to develop a schedule that puts a special emphasis on underserved communities. By reaching out to people in communities that are traditionally underserved, the Tour is targeting areas that need the most attention and care. Also, the tests provided represent some of the most critical health data needed for the early detection and prevention of diseases. Free Tests
Total Cholesterol Test
The National Cholesterol Education Program recommends that adults have their cholesterol levels checked at least every five years. Studies have shown lowering cholesterol can reduce the risk of heart disease. Participants are given their total cholesterol level and provided with educational material on healthy cholesterol levels and ways to lower their cholesterol.
Glucose Test
Glucose is a form of sugar that is the body’s primary fuel. Blood glucose levels may indicate risk for diabetes, a disease in which the body does not produce or properly use insulin. Insulin is a hormone that is needed to convert sugar, starches and other food into energy. Visitors will be given their glucose level and information on diabetes awareness.
Both the Total Cholesterol and Glucose tests are performed via a finger stick blood test.
Blood Pressure Test
High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, is a serious condition affecting one in three American adults. High blood pressure increases the risk for heart disease and stroke, which is the leading cause of death in the United States. Visitors will receive their blood pressure reading and educational materials.
Bone Density Test
Osteoporosis is a disease that slowly thins and weakens bones. Bone density testing is the best way to determine bone mass and reveal present and future risk of fracture. The test is done via foot ultrasound and takes 60 seconds with immediate results.
Body Mass Index
An estimated 30 percent of U.S. adults aged 20 years and older – over 60 million people – are obese, defined as having a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher. Visitors will be given a percentage of body fat reading using a body mass index analyzer, a hand-held machine that sends a weak electric current through the body and then estimates body fat percentage and body fat index.
Waist Circumference
Waist circumference is a horizontal measurement of the abdomen above the upper hip bone. High waist circumference is associated with an increased risk for type 2 diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular disease when the BMI is between 25 and 34.9.
